China Travel Guide

Hitching Hitching around China is possible but it is not recommendable. There are many personal risks inherent in hitching, even more in this vast and singular country. You might use public transport that is becoming more available and currently covers almost all routes. If you have to hitch, never do it alone.

The best places for hitching are on town and city exit ways. Wave your hand with the palm down, at buses to facilitate getting the driver's attention. Then, negotiate the fare and make sure that you have your destination written down in Chinese characters.

Some travelers hitch into Tibet on trucks as a form of avoids government traveling restrictions. Note that these travelers put themselves in dangerous, as conditions on the four-day ride are extremely uncomfortable and it can get very cold. If you are found by police, you might have to pay a significant fine.
