Modern times

Modern times The Fifth Generation of Chinese directors from the Beijing Film Academy appeared in mid-1980s with a subversive style. Zhang Yimou - who introduced in the artistic world to Gong Li, an international superstar and the most important actress of China-, Tian Zhuangzhuang and Chen Kaige were part of this filmmakers boom. Some of the best productions are: "One and Eight" (1983), "Yellow Earth" (1984), "Red Sorghum" (1987), "Ju Dou" (1989), "Raise the Red Lantern (1991)", "Farewell My Concubine" (1993), "To Live" (1994) and "Not One Less" (1998).

In the late 1990s, appeared a new generation of young filmmakers, considered as the Sixth Generation. This generation is focus on an even more critical view of the Chinese society. Their production is principally underground movies like "Beijing Bastards" of Zhang Yuan, "Beijing Bicycle" of Wang Xiaoshuai, "Unknown Pleasures" of Jia Zhangke and "Summer Palace" of Lou Ye among others.

In recent years, China has enjoyed a new international success with films like "Hero", "Suzhou River" and "The Road Home". Some Chinese directors are trying to mimic the Hollywood features in order to commercialize their movies all over the world.

Today, there are also multi-national productions working in China. An example is the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000), a film with American and Taiwanese participation. Its success has permitted other international productions like "House of Flying Daggers" (2004), "The Promise" (2005) and "The Banquet" (2006).

Hong Kong Cinema is one of the world's largest movie producer, but their film industry is almost completely dedicated to entertainment rather than "art", basically for commercial reasons. Some renowned directors are John Woo (A Better Tomorrow-1985) and Wong Karwai (Fallen Angels) and the most famous actors of Hong Kong are Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat and Leslie Cheung.
